Such an excellent way to tie a bow around the ending year, and usher in a new one, Bravo!
I have delighted in your posts from the beginning, and look forward to each one in the future.
May your retirement be as rewarding as your career, and from me to you, retirement is one of the best jobs I've ever had! Here's hoping to the same for you and your colleagues!
What a great recounting of your genesis! You had eluded to some of it piecemeal, but to hear the whole story was a treat.
And of course I subscribed, as you deserve some remuneration for all the great work you do, and thank you for keeping it at an affordable price point. (I don't subscribe to the cartoon chicken due to his pricing, which I view as just a bit too high)
Looking forward to seeing more of your great work in 2026! Prost!!!
For what it’s worth, I cancelled my Wall Street Journal subscription - (I thought the content became abysmal). I then subscribed to Robert Bryce, then Doomberg, then others and will now to you. The end result has been a vast improvement in the quality of information, for less than a WSJ subscription. The net savings are still motivating the search and support for other sane independent writers. What’s not to like.
Wow, that's heady company and quite the compliment for a little Substack like us, KJ. Thank you for that vote of confidence!
Please check out Trevor Casper > https://trevorcasper.substack.com/ Far beyond sane, Trevor is an industry expert (energy) but more importantly an outstanding writer.
I just had a chance to read your last post and have upgraded to "Mentalist".
I hung 'em up 20 years ago after a career with a major oil and gas company. That was pre Substack and pre AI so I had to educate myself on things environmental (and other) the good old fashion way.
That’s a lovely way to end the year. Congratulations on your success to date, and best wishes for new heights to come. Your friendship and support of my work is a blessing. Happy New Year ‘Mental!
Just finishing off a quiet week off at the lake in SW Saskatchewan, the locals held their usual all day curling funspiel on the lake, lots of work to create 4 sheets. Back to reality Monday.
Keep hammering away, that is what the climate/insane do, except their talking points are inane.
I’m especially sick of those that prattle how we have to go renewable to be “competitive”, a bald faced lie unless you redefine the word competitive like the left has done for many other words.
What they really fear is any western industrial countries flushing the green nonsense and having resulting massive economic growth relative to the rest, which is why they fear Trump so much, among other similar reasons.
If we go heavier on ruinables we can be "competitive" ..... like Germany!
You folks in SK and AB are some of my favorites on earth. Was in Tessier/Delisle area back in early October. The grain country in those provinces in October is a sight to see every fall. Even watching the harvest a few weeks earlier fills one with awe every time.
I just finished a most incredible book about the history of the Cypress Hills. It was sent to me by friend and fellow Substack writer Trevor Casper. Cannot recommend it enough. Wallace Stegner's Wolf Willow.
Thank you for writing this newsletter! As an engineer and environmental professional myself, you, Doomberg and Robert Bryce are giving voice to many of the absurdities and issues that have been bothering me, but that have not been covered in the (now totally useless) mainstream press. Keep up the great work.
You're giving us more credit than we deserve comparing us to those icons of publishing in this space.
We aspire to be thought of as writers in the same flotilla battling energy blindness so for anyone to use those specific comparisons is a compliment that's gratifying and we'll keep trying to improve!
You underestimate your writing skills. It is always informative and enjoyable to get a notification from your SubStack. SubStack has a different vibe than any other platform, it’s truly a platform where individuals can share their knowledge and opinions without fear of being blocked or cancelled by the platform operators.
Thanks, Dave. You've supported this work in every way possible.
Like an old campaigner who is steady in all conditions, knows his way around all kinds of cover, and never bumps a bird no matter how warm and dry it is.
For those reasons, you're always one of the first dogs on the ground, Dave. ;)
Dear E-MENTAL --> I'm embarrassed. I don't know if I'm a subscriber or not. It was Glenn Greenwald who first attracted me to the Substack platform, which was quickly followed by Bari Weiss and the reporting by Matt Taibbi & Michael Shellenberger detailing their examination of the Twitter Files in early 2023. I think it was around then that I found Doomberg and environMENTAL, followed by Sasha Stone and a host of other writers that appealed to my own set of values, interests, and sense of well-being. It's been really great and has filled the vast void of silliness created by the status quo news.
Would you please let me know if I'm a bona-fide subscriber so that, if I'm not, I can rectify myself?
Thank you and please keep up the great work. I always look forward to seeing your next missive.

Maybe I have found a home and don't need to come up with a Substack on my own? Will explore and keep you posted. Meantime, check this out, the fruit of a long and continuing conversation and considerable prodding from me. https://www.scirp.org/pdf/ajcc_2361674.pdf Coverage here https://climatediscussionnexus.com/2026/01/07/co2-and-atmospheric-temperatures-persistent-trouble-making-them-fit-together/.
Late to the game but much congratulations on retirement to both you and your team.
May you cherish these moments, especially the moments you get to spend with your loved ones.
Thanks very much.
In the first 7 mos: Argentina and Saskatchewan with my son bird hunting. And Wyoming with 5 friends fly fishing.
Life is good. 😉
Ah yes! The good life!
I was born in Wyoming myself and was just recently in Argentina.

I've been scrolling through our subscriber report, and you were original subscriber #33, New Year's Eve 2022. Wow.
Thanks for being with us from the beginning and all your forms of support!
Thank you! As the old saying goes, "Even a blind pig finds an acorn"
Keep up the good work!
Is it blind pig or blind squirrel? Think it’s geographic, maybe.
Either way, thanks and will do.

Thanks, VG. Your also one of our early free subscribers, dating to Spring 2023.
Very grateful for the support and for being part of this community from the beginning!
It's a great value, and I'm VERY glad to help you further your reach.

Enjoy your retirement and wet lines.
You, sir, are one of our first 200 subscribers. In the first 60 days when we still had on our diapers.
Thank you very much, Mark. Very grateful!
Thanks for your work. I will be signing up!
You're more than welcome.
Just saw that you did.
Thanks so much for the support!
Your welcome - and I hope you take up my offer.
That’s a lovely way to end the year. Congratulations on your success to date, and best wishes for new heights to come. Your friendship and support of my work is a blessing. Happy New Year ‘Mental!
Getting to read your work has been one of the joys of being on Substack. More than support your work, I admire it, and aspire to your writing ability.
Getting to know you personally has made Substack something way more than a publishing or social media or whatever platform.
Thank you. The feeling is mutual, Trevor!
I too thought I had subscribed, now fixed.

Now if you could only do something about Carney.
If we go heavier on ruinables we can be "competitive" ..... like Germany!

Will check out the book
My lake is called Pelletier, northeast of cypress hills.
Delisle is about an hour east of where I grew up.
Happy new year.
Fell in love with that area twenty years ago. Wish I'd have started coming up there sooner.

Hi @environMENTAL,
I checked if I had a pledge in place and for some reason I hadn't. Now I have.
Wishing you an excellent year 2026 to all of you. Looking forward to reading more of your articles in the coming years.
Julien
Very kind of you, Julien. I saw it this morning.
Thank you for the generosity. We're very grateful!
You're very welcome.
Great stuff! Congratulations and greatly appreciate your work.

I’m happy to become a supporter. Keep up the great work, and Happy New Year!
Thanks, Urs. You've been a regular here, and added some valuable EU flavor to the discussion.
We appreciate your support and adds.
While you wouldn’t know it from my name, I live in CT! 😂
(I married a girl from there. Or, you might say, rescued her from it. ;)
Lucky her 😂 originally I am from NY so I ended up in only a slightly, imperceptibly, better place

Hi, Jeff. I'm pleased to report that you were one of our first 250 original subscribers, 21st of March 2023. Bona-fide as they come!
And one of our most frequent commenters, too.
Thanks for your early and consistent support!
You made my day!
