Meanwhile, in SW Kansas this week it snowed, warmed up, blew 50 plus, snowed again. The oil/gas E and P groups out here are amazing. After I shared this at breakfast, my buddies from New Hampshire, Oklahoma and Minnesota had a highly accurate reply. “ That’s an entire new level of stupidity “. And as one guy stated accurately, not just the terrorist group, the “ pretend government “ is just as guilty…..
Great article, Mental. I wonder how the VG got to the transmission lines and then left. Did they use bicycles? Hopefully not bc the tires are made from petroleum. Did they retreat to an off-grid cabin in the woods or did they return to their temperature-controlled apartment/house? The irony is really thick with these groups.
I recently finished the book “Icarus Fallen” by French philosopher Chantel Delsol where she writes, “A society of facile comfort produces narrow, petty people, not because, through some kind of spontaneous generation they are born without character, but because, in the absence of conditions that would allow it to develop, their character remains latent.”
I've seen references to this most recent attack, but have not had the chance to read anything substantive until today. Thanks for the great analysis. It seems highly suspicious that no one has been arrested for these crimes. Doomberg's sister publication, Classics Read Aloud, recently published its recording of Jack London's classic, To Build A Fire. With a gathering sense of dread, the story shows what cold can do if you have no defense against it. Unless and until the authorities track these folks down and prosecute them, their terrorist acts will continue, and God forbid, likely escalate.
I wrote a review of Malm's book a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if you've read that essay of mine. If you would like to read it (and haven't), here's a link. 😊
Another well done piece, environMENTAL, thank you.
I predict we never will hear of any of these kooks being arrested or prosecuted by German authorities. German authorities are almost as neutered as are the British. When it comes to the econuts, these spineless 'leaders' won't say S***, even if they had a mouthful of it.
Europe is a lesson to the North American continent: DO NOT FOLLOW THIS PATH.
My suggestion for the perpetrators of this energy terrorism is the same as for what should happen to the goofballs who threw soup on the Van Gogh paintings in London:
When they are convicted for their crimes, they should NOT be sent to prison.
Instead, they should be sentenced to live for 15 years in the most impoverished, energy-deprived villages in the remotest parts of Africa or say, Bangladesh.
For all of that time, they are to have no access to hydrocarbons of any kind or any electricity. None. Zero.
After that 15 years, they will be required to come back to the court that sentenced them and give a full accounting of their lives without modern energy and provide a full-throated apology. If they refuse to do so, they should be required to spend the rest of their days living in abject energy poverty.
My guess is that by the end of 15 years of energy poverty, they might change their worldview.
For gosh sakes, don't send them somewhere warm, send them to Cape Wales, Alaska. It would take less than five days for them to come to the conclusion that energy poverty is a killer.
We like the approach. Here's an alternate: Drop them somewhere on a remote island, not in the Caribbean or at mid-latitudes, but somewhere farther north. Somewhere cabins or small, simple buildings exist that are off-grid. Air drop solar panels, racks, inverters, cabling, control systems, etc., maybe even a small utility scale battery system, and if the geology and tools and equipment allow, several (small enough to self-install) wind turbines. All the transmission poles, plenty of cabling, mini sub stations, etc.
Same terms: no hydrocarbons, and the only electricity comes from that which you generate via wind and solar. All of your staying warm in winter, cooking, transportation, etc. must come from the spinning green crucifixes and the sun catchers. One electric car on the island (by ferry) and that has to be charged all the time by the energy you generate. Drop them in late Spring when the weather is good. Have to last a year. I like the coast of Maine, an island in Muscongus Bay. Wind will be steady throughout the year. Might get 35-40% capacity factor. And will need it. B/c from Oct 1 to May 1, the solar won't beat 12% capacity factor.
Got a question for environMENTAL, who I now find to be possibly in Canada if the location language is correct - and if so would explain a lot - from a US, "middle of the roader", Independent Voter - having always voted the person and the topic with no party affiliation -- by choice:
--- what is factually incorrect about the atmospheric conditions and business based connections stated in the "manifesto you've published here - and taking out the political stuff - just the facts as stated?:
--- and would not a self-staining / no fuel required / install if where needed per individual site both stationary and movable or vehicular / developing as much clean electricity as needed per site / for as long as is needed per site -- fill the requirements the writers asked for indirectly?
Let's reverse this. What is factually right about the atmospheric conditions and business based connections stated in the manifesto - taking out the political stuff, just the facts as stated?
And wouldn't a self-sustaining, no fuel required/install where needed/much as you need per site be something Volcano Group would be thrilled about? It's so disruptive as to almost be anarchist in the power industry. Why don't you offer it up as a solution they might embrace?
The word terrorist doesn't seem to elicit the same outcomes of the past.
A lead injection tends to stop terrorists from disrupting things further, whereas a stern talking to and silent tolerance appears not to have the same effect.
I freely admit I could not finish their entire manifesto, as the complaints are tired and well worn. while these psychopaths are dangerous and should be treated as such, perhaps far more ire should be focused on the German police and politicians for allowing this to continue unhindered.
It is sad to watch a once great nation sink into the abyss
And agreed. After the first half dozen attacks and a couple of manifestos, you'd think German authorities would have been more aggressive, openly calling them ecoterrorists and somehow finding and prosecuting a few.
the thing is, for the true believers, and the Greens in the German government and Die Linke, sacrificing a few people to get their way is completely in character

I loom forward to your next piece.
"We can no longer afford the rich."🙄
Coincidentally, the rich think that they can no longer afford the poor.

Good work, 'Mental.

Fascinating. Destructive Luddite naïveté sprinkled some trace elements of Jacobin fecklessness.

Remote island, say in the Alutian Island chain.
No point in giving them equipment to produce juice via wind and solar.
They will be too busy trying to feed themselves and will die of starvation or hypothermia before anything could possibly be built.
Their skeletons will serve as a lesson for all of mankind.

Just curious.

I don't need them as the system is being privately developed for mass production.
Besides -- they're destructive which is the last thing needed.
I just let public demand take care of it.
An extrodinary piece, keep up the great work!
Thanks!

Who knew.
Lead injections tend to have that effect, often permanent.
A couple of loads of #8 bird shot in the rear end from 35 yards before resorting to the stuff measured in grains (not shot size) seems reasonable.
Agreed, though as their brains seem to be in their arse, it could provide the same stopping power.
This reads like a thriller. I had no idea this group resorted to such extreme violence. Scary.
We honestly wonder if AI wrote parts of that manifesto.
And we worry about what happens when they learn to use better tools than fire.
That’s scary. The action seems to have been carefully calculated.
I freely admit I could not finish their entire manifesto, as the complaints are tired and well worn. while these psychopaths are dangerous and should be treated as such, perhaps far more ire should be focused on the German police and politicians for allowing this to continue unhindered.

It is work to get through, for sure.
And agreed. After the first half dozen attacks and a couple of manifestos, you'd think German authorities would have been more aggressive, openly calling them ecoterrorists and somehow finding and prosecuting a few.
I wonder, given the insanity that passes for German governance, are they tacitly approving their actions?
Hard to say. But harder to fathom such would be allowed at 52 deg N in January.
the thing is, for the true believers, and the Greens in the German government and Die Linke, sacrificing a few people to get their way is completely in character
Well that partly explains the love affair with trying to rearm (with an energy deficit, at that...) and hawking for war with you know who.
exactly
